Months of chilly air, snowy days and gray skies have given us the winter blues and we’re longing for warmer weather. Here are some fun and healthy ways to cure your winter blues.

  1. Break out the grill. You could fire up the grill outside, but if that’s still too frigid, you could use a grill pan to experience the taste of summer inside the comfort of your home. Grill your favorite meats like chicken, fish and lean beef along with winter vegetables like Brussels sprouts, onions, carrots, squash, and sweet potatoes. Check out this Orange BBQ Chicken with Grilled Vegetables.
  1. Work up a sweat. Heat up the body internally by upping the intensity of your workout, such as trying some high intensity interval training (HIIT). On the treadmill, pick up the pace or increase the incline; on the bike, up the resistance or sprint for timed intervals; perform burpees or jump rope in between strength training sets. Need something for the whole family? Head to an indoor bounce house or trampoline park for fun and fitness.
  1. Warm up with spices. Add some heat to cold winter nights with spices like black pepper, cayenne pepper, curry, garlic, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, and cloves. Think about your favorite comfort foods and wintry dishes. They tend to contain many of these warming spices. Choose recipes with these spices like this Moroccan Bean Pepper Stew or add these warming spices to hot cereals, soups, tea and smoothies.
  1. Fire up the competition. A family game night will surely heat up the competition. Gather around the fire place for a few board games or get some movement with interactive games like Wii or ping pong. Have some space? Create an indoor obstacle course with cones, pool noodles, and hoops. You can grab some ideas here.
