Keeping your family healthy and ensuring they get the nutrients they need is something you probably consider daily. Conflicting reports and advice can make it confusing to know if vitamins are an important part of a healthy lifestyle.
While it’s best to get nutrients from real foods, taking a multivitamin can help fill in as needed. To get the facts, we asked Meijer Pharmacist, Jackie Morse Pharm. D., BCPS, about her take on multivitamins.
Q: To keep your family healthy and make sure they get the nutrients they need, is a multivitamin a good idea?
JM: People take multivitamins for a number of reasons, including trying to fill the gaps where their diets or other lifestyle factors may fail them. It’s important to note that the best way to get the nutrients we need is through the foods we eat, and that a multivitamin won’t make up for a poor diet.
Q: Do adults need to take a multivitamin?
JM: Most healthy adults probably don’t need a multivitamin. However, certain people may benefit from specific nutrients, like vitamin D, calcium or folic acid, which can be found in multivitamins or in separate supplements.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist to see if a multivitamin is right for you and your family.
